The Student Council at PS/MS 95 is comprised of students in grades 6 – 8. We have an Executive Board of 8th graders only and class representatives from each grade. The main focus of the Student Council is to give our students an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and have a platform to voice their opinions and concerns for the betterment of their school.
Students interested in joining the council must complete an application signed by teachers and parents acknowledging participation. Applicants run a campaign and are voted into position by their classmates.
The Council meets monthly. Students are engaged in leadership skill building exercises and then discuss student concerns/activities within the school. Most often concerns include school food, extra-curricular activities and most recently bullying; activities include school dances and snack sales, sports teams, and support of a charitable organization. Such organizations have included St. Jude’s Hospital, American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We have participated in canned food, toy and coat drives, giving much needed supplies to the less fortunate. Within our school community, student representatives also sit on the Wellness Council and go to Albany, NY annually to advocate for maintenance of funding in our School Based Health Clinic. They sit on the Safety and Discipline Committee where they learn the importance of and how to keep our school community safe.
