WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

Kindergarten

Reading: The students are learning the main idea of a story. 

Writing: The students are learning  to write a persuasive piece.. The students have learned fact and opinion. 

Mathematics: The students are learning how to find the parts of numbers 11-20, using a double Ten-frame. 

Science: The students are learning all about the weather and the temperature  on surfaces.

Social Studies: Kindergarten is learning about directions, community helpers, what’s in their community, landmarks in NY and the map of the United States.

1st Grade

Reading: Students are working on different reading strategies to help them comprehend a text, such as: making inferences, predictions, and retelling. In Fundations the students are learning about the long vowel sound using vowel teams and vowel consonant e rule.   

Writing: This month we are working on persuasive writing unit. The students have been working on providing reasons to support their opinions.

Mathematics:. This month the students are working on adding and subtracting  tens and ones using different strategies like counting on a number line,  drawing models or using related simple math facts. 

 Science: This month students   are learning about the spinning earth and how the sky looks different during different times of the day as well as from different places on the planet. 

Social Studies: This month students are learning about their responsibilities of global citizens  and different things happening around their community.

2nd Grade

Reading: We have are still focusing on social issues. Students will read and make connections about social issues, using books and articles. In Fundations, students will continue to learn about vowel teams/double vowel syllables.

Writing: We are working hard in our persuasive unit. We will be convincing the reader by stating an opinion and supplying reasons through persuasive writing.

Mathematics: We have just finished our measurement unit. We have begun our 7th unit which focuses on money and time. We will be learning to count coins, bills and tell the time. 

Science: In science, we are still working on Unit 2 which focuses on properties in materials. We have been learning the design practice, and what happens when we heat and cool materials.

Social Studies: We have finished our 3rd unit in social studies. We will begin our 4th unit which focuses on the United States Government.
