Hip Hop Soldiers began in 2006. The purpose behind this group is to provide students with a positive outlet to express themselves, build confidence, and learn to work with others for the benefit of all. Students are mostly from grades 4-6 and they participate in learning hip hop choreography. It also includes a small group of students from grades 7 and 8 that serve as team captains and assistants. Throughout the years, the number of members has increased each year. Last year, the team included fifty students.
To become members, the students apply and then audition to be selected. To remain on the team, students must show effort in their academics, demonstrate good citizenship within the school, and be positive role models for their peers. Students practice weekly and celebrate their hard work by performing at culminating activities such as The Bronx Arts Festival at Lehman College.
