Dancing Classrooms

Picture
Dancing Classroom’s mission is to cultivate essential life skills in children through the art of social dance. The vision is to help create schools and communities where every child is connected, respected, and provided a safe environment in which to thrive.

PS/MS 95X began its partnership with Dancing Classrooms in 2007. The 5th and 8th Grade students work with a teaching artist for 20 lessons, learning 6 dances. The 5th Grade learns the Meringue, Foxtrot, Rumba, Tango, Swing, and Waltz. The 8th Grade learns the Meringue, Foxtrot, Salsa, Tango, Swing, and Waltz.

Following the 20 lessons, all the students present what they have learned in a Culminating Event for their classmates and parents. To further the experience, a team of 6 ladies and 6 gentlemen from each grade are chosen to represent our school at the Colors of the Rainbow Team Match. Students compete against other schools in the city for the opportunity to earn the Grand Final Championship trophy.

PS/MS 95X’s 8th Grade Team has won the Grand Final Championship 3 times since our partnership began. In addition, students have the opportunity to continue dance lessons with reduced price lessons on the weekend, through their parent’s support. The community and camaraderie developed over the course of the lessons and competitions permeate long after these events are over.

Dancing Classrooms programs address several pressing needs simultaneously: the in-school residency provides high quality arts education where it is otherwise lacking, and the extra-curricular programs offer consistent positive engagement with the support of a network of Teaching Artists and peers. Dancing Classrooms provides an equal emotional, cognitive and behavioral education to children of all backgrounds, whether their home lives are chaotic, or organized and protective. By cultivating a positive support network with ballroom dance at the core, Dancing Classrooms’ ultimate goal is to create motivated, engaged students with essential skills for a successful life
