“Bent On Learning is a nonprofit organization committed to teaching yoga to New York City public school children. The organization brings yoga to as many students as possible—not after school, but right there, in the classroom, where the learning happens.”
PS/MS 95X has partnered with Bent On Learning in order to expose and teach children yoga in a comprehensive program so students can then integrate the practice into their own daily lives.
The yoga instructors collaborate with teachers and staff to customize a program that fits the school community. At PS/MS 95X we structured a program to meet once or twice a week for 10 weeks in the fall and spring semesters. An experienced, licensed instructor leads the class with the classroom teacher to enthusiastically show the passion for yoga and how to safely practice it.
The goal is to create healthier and happier students so that yoga practice transcends the school into daily habits toward overall living and health. Yoga helps to reinforce the notion to be physically and mentally healthy for life. Yoga helps the students feel better about themselves, release stress, and calm emotions. The practice offers tools for students to manage emotions and behavior. As a result, the students learn the building blocks for improved academic achievement and focus.

Over the past 15 years, Bent On Learning has developed a comprehensive yoga program for elementary, middle and high school students throughout New York City. Our curriculum addresses the whole child and develops physical, social and emotional intelligence in our students. Our intervention provides physical activity once or twice per week during the academic day, while circumventing the need for large gyms or playing fields, expensive equipment or special clothing. Additionally, it provides students with opportunities to develop a growth mindset, develop positive relationships with adults and peers, explore self-interests, engage in experiential learning and build self-esteem. All of these skills have been demonstrated to serve as building blocks for academic achievement in students in Pre-K through 12th grade.
